According to the Environmental Protection Agency,

Many floor cleaners used in hospitals contain harsh chemicals such as quaternary ammonium chlorides and butoxyethanol, which can be harmful to human health and the environment. To reduce the risk of cross-contamination for patients, conventional mopping techniques require janitors to change the clean­ing solution after mopping every two or three room — meaning that cleaning solutions (including both chemicals and several gallons of water) are constantly being disposed of and replenished.

The answer, the EPA says, are microfiber mops—made from a dense polyester/polyamide fiber blend that can hold six times its weight in water. The human hair-thick fibers also attract dust, and can penetrate the tiny pores where dirt and germs hide in most floors. The mops are light and durable, easy to clean, and spread less contamination than regular cotton mops.

In fact, a study done at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento showed that microfiber mops reduce chemical use and disposal by 95 percent, reduce cleaning times for patient rooms, and reduce custodial staff injuries and workers’ compensation claims. Economic benefits included a 60 percent average lifetime cost savings for mops, and 20 percent labor savings each day.

Both the definition behind and the attraction toward thread counts make sense — the term is simply a measurement of the number of both vertical and horizontal threads in a single square inch of fabric. More threads must then equal more comfort.

In limited ways, it’s true. Many high-end bed sheets on the market feature thread counts of up to 600. And those stiff, scratchy, newspaper-like wraps you’ve slept on at cheap roach motels were probably closer to 50.

But smarter sheet shoppers know that thread count numbers shouldn’t be the single relied-upon indicator for the comfort and softness you’re hoping for from your sheets.

Here are some other factors:

Ply — Take a thread, and twist it around another thread to form a single, double-thread. Make sense? That’s “Ply,” and it’s an important factor when it comes to understanding linens. One oft-cited example of how thread count numbers can be misleading revolves around ply: Do 300 thread count sheets contain 300 single-ply threads in that particular square inch? Or is it 150 double-ply threads?

Understanding what kind of ply you want actually leads to our next factor:

Thickness — Use fine, thin silk or cotton, and your sheets will likely be soft and smooth. Use a ball of yarn better left to your grandmother’s knitting (or a kitten’s playing), and, well, you can imagine what kind of sleep you’ll get. Most sheets quite obviously trend toward the finer end of the spectrum, but there is still measurable (and noticeable) variance in thread thickness. In the end, thinner equals higher thread counts and a lighter, more delicate fabric. Thicker threads increase durability, but can be much heavier and tend to lose that smoothness factor.

Material quality — You could probably find a way to jam 600 pine needles into a square inch, but the number alone wouldn’t translate to a comfortable sleep. Don’t get lost in numbers while overlooking simple factors like the quality of the material—and the quality of fabric treatment and finishing—you’ll be getting. Cotton, polyester and blends each feature their own sets of pros and cons—and each come in both high and low-quality forms. At Hunt, we use only the finest quality materials (and the most value-oriented and cost-effective—not that we’re bragging).

Towels are starting to get holes, stains that can’t be removed, and are linting everywhere. It’s time for replacements, but inevitable questions arise for a value-motivated consumers:

How long should kitchen towels last? How can I make sure I’ve gotten my money’s worth? How can I maximize my investment in high-quality towels?

Three main factors effect the answer:

• Towel Use

The uses of Hunt towels are simply endless — bar mopping, general purpose wiping, low-lint cleaning and more. But towel longevity might vary with each type of drying job.

Extensive exposure to chemicals, rough surfaces or corrosive materials will inevitably take a harsher toll on your towels. Meanwhile, simple absorption of water won’t. Fortunately, we provide towels specifically designed for all sorts of different tasks. Pick the right towel for the right situation, and you’ll see why an investment in our durable, super-absorbent, high-quality fabrics pays off in the end.

• Towel Construction

Microfiber. Organic. Cotton. Synthetic. We make towels from all sorts of materials, while maintaining an equal commitment to quality and durability in each. But the construction elements of different kinds of kitchen towels do, in fact, make a difference in how long each type will last.

For example, our new microfiber towels are among the most durable, most absorbent and longest-lasting in the industry. The towels are known to perform for hundreds of washings, while only increasing in softness over time. Our more traditional cotton towels require more care.

• Towel Laundering
  1. Use bleach with white towels only, and try to avoid chlorine bleaches with cotton towels. Hydrogen peroxide will provide the same results as chlorine bleach without the harming effects that chlorine bleach can have.
  2. Avoid fabric softeners which will reduce absorbency.
  3. Overdrying and excessive drying temperatures will reduce life expectancy as well as the absorbency of the towels.

Poor or abusive laundering techniques can shorten the life and effectiveness of your towels. Here are some easy strategies to avoid this:

Many companies now advertise wrinkle-free wholesale table linen.   Innovations in polyester material the last decade have come closer in achieving a truly wrinkle-free product but to this day there is still no such thing as a wrinkle-free tablecloth.  The best way to insure a nicely finished tablecloth is to have it processed with a commercial flat-work iron.  This isn’t always possible so here a few ways to reduce wrinkling and improve the look of your tablecloths:

• Load washer to 1/2 capacity.  Remove linens promptly
• Load dryer to 1/2 capacity
• Allow tablecloths to finish on a cool down cycle
• Remove tablecloths promptly from dryer
• Allow tablecloths to set (folded neatly or hung) for 24 hours

While microfiber towels have been applauded for years in the industry for their longevity, superior cleaning, and non lint attributes, the price tag held many people back.  As the economy and overall business climate has become more competitive people have begun to realize that a towel that lasts longer is a better investment.  Initiatives to become more “Green” have prompted many to reduce paper usage.  Rising energy costs over the last several years have also made many people take a second look at microfiber and take the plunge as microfiber doesn’t require near the energy to dry as an all cotton towel.

Where are microfiber towels being used today?  All sorts of places you might not have thought of before.  Many food service establishments such as restaurants and clubs are now using microfiber terry towels as their standard wiping towel.  Microfiber glass towels are being praised for their great absorbency and no lint cleaning on glassware and silverware.  Many car washes are now using microfiber towels, in more than one style for a variety of specific applications.   Hospitals have been using microfiber terry towels and mop pads for years, now microfiber honey comb towels are being used in surgery, replacing 100% cotton towels.

Will Microfiber towels totally replace cotton? No.  But there is no doubt that the acceptance of microfiber towels will grow in the years ahead.

Napkins and tablecloths made from Murata Air Jet Spun polyester offer the following benefits over 100% cotton:

• Consistency – Because polyester wrinkles less and holds color better than all cotton the polyester product will provide a more consistent look.  The best a 100% cotton product will ever look is the day you take it out of the carton.  A blend or 50/50 product begins losing the cotton fiber immediately once the product is laundered and eventually leaves the napkin being a limp piece of polyester.
• Non linting – The better polyester napkins and tablecloths on the market do not lint and leave fibers on clothing.  Cotton by nature loses fiber and does lint.  There are some better cotton products that will lint less but are priced at a tremendous premium.
• Cost to own – The better polyester products will outlast cotton many times over.  Add in the fact that polyester dries faster and there is a nice energy savings as well.  Finally, chemicals such as chlorine bleach do not destroy the fibers of polyester like it does cotton.
• Absorbency – The few places that I still see a cotton napkin generally have so much starch in the napkin that it makes it really hard to say that cotton absorbs better than polyester.  In fact the better polyester on the market today does absorb, oftentimes better than cotton.

Just because a towel is bigger and heavier may not make it the best selection for customers and guests.

• Just as important as the weight is the construction of the yarns used in the towel.  Towels made with longer staple yarns made on shuttle-less looms absorb better and last longer than towels made with shorter staple yarns that have more impurities.
• The drying time and cost of energy is more with these heavier towels.  Many laundries can attest to this point. Have you ever stayed in a hotel and the towel felt damp?  When this is the case it is usually one of the oversized towels.
• Thinner towels often ABSORB BETTER than the heavier towels.  I test and evaluate many of the products we offer and find that the thinner towels absorb better.
• Cost!  Generally a towel that is lighter in weight will cost less.

There will always be a demand and in some cases a legitimate need for the heaviest towel available but all too often the next step down will satisfy the needs of the user just fine.
